Begum Akhtar’s Final Public Performance in Ahmedabad: The Show That Never Repeated
An advertisement in Ahmedabad newspapers announced Begum Akhtar’s October 26, 1974, concert as her last show before leaving for America. Her scheduled performances in Vadodara and Surat never took place, making the Ahmedabad event her final public appearance.
The advertisements carried a special message: “Last Show in Ahmedabad Before Leaving for America.” The announcement invited audiences to attend what was scheduled to be her final performance in Ahmedabad before her departure for the United States.
Following the Ahmedabad programme, Begum Akhtar was scheduled to perform at two more venues in Gujarat. Her concerts were planned for Vadodara on October 29 and Surat on October 30, 1974. However, neither of these performances ever took place.
The Ahmedabad concert ultimately became the last public performance of Begum Akhtar’s life. The advertisements announcing the event, published in newspapers in different languages, remain a reminder of the programme that went down in history as her final public appearance.
Even today, Ahmedabad’s Town Hall stands as a reminder of that moment, preserving memories much like those associated with an old banyan or peepal tree.
Begum Akhtar gave musical expression to emotions of pain that are often difficult to put into words. Through her music, she illuminated and gave completeness to those feelings, creating a legacy for which there remains no alternative to this day.
Located on Ashram Road along the banks of the Sabarmati River, Ahmedabad’s Town Hall also holds another historical connection. The route of Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March passed in front of this very location in 1930.
The venue therefore remains associated with two significant memories: the historic Dandi March and the final public performance of Begum Akhtar, whose musical legacy continues to be remembered.
